The Pat Finucane Centre marked the 51st anniversary of the introduction of internment in the North of Ireland with a lunchtime event in Aonach Mhacha on Tuesday 9th August.
Internment involved the extrajudical deprivation of liberty. That is, interned individuals were rounded up, arrested and held outside of the judicial process without trial. Torture was commonly practised on the internees.
Anne and Alan delivered a presentation on the history of internment during the most recent conflict and personal accounts of the traumatic experience of internment came from the audience.
PFC’s exhibition “The Legacy of Colonialism” is on display daily, 9:00-17:00, from Tuesday 9th August until noon on Friday 12th August in Aonach Mhacha. All are welcome!
